What matters when advising on and implementing an LEG
An LEG offers new opportunities, but requires technical, local and organisational clarity.
In a local electricity community, producers and consumers can jointly use locally produced solar power. Unlike with a ZEV or vZEV, this is not self-consumption behind a shared connection or interconnection point: an LEG uses the public distribution grid and therefore requires a clear grid-topological and regulatory classification.

Check technical and local requirementsBefore you establish an LEG, clarify which locations and participants are eligible and whether the requirements for a joint LEG are met.

Your responsibilities
What you take on as the operator
Operating a LEG involves various organisational and administrative tasks. Plan sufficient time and resources for this. You organise and manage the LEG and are responsible, among other things, for participants, contracts, internal billing and changes during operation.
01Organise participants and contractsYou look for potential participants and conclude a private-law contract with all parties involved. Also ensure that all participants have a myBKW account. If they do not yet have one, they must create it before registering.02Establish and manage an LEGYou create your LEG in the BKW LEG Portal and record changes, such as participants joining and leaving.03Bill electricity within the LEGYou are responsible for billing the electricity exchanged within the LEG. This also includes payment arrears and debt collection.04Comply with legal requirementsAs the operator, you are responsible for complying with the legal requirements applicable to your LEG.
Data exchange and billing
Apply for an EIC number for billing data
For billing your LEG, BKW provides you with the required metering data in EBIX format. To receive this data, you need an EIC number.
You apply for the EIC number from the national grid company Swissgrid. BKW can then provide you with the relevant data for billing your LEG electronically.
