Local electricity community
Use solar power locally
With an LEG, producers and consumers can jointly use locally produced solar power via the public distribution grid.

How an LEG works
A local marketplace for solar energy
In a LEG, people with solar installations and people without their own installation come together.
A Local Electricity Community enables locally produced solar power to be bought and sold within a municipality or neighbourhood. The electricity flows to the participants via the existing public grid. The quantities are measured, and the LEG organises the internal billing independently.
In brief
What speaks in favour of an LEG – and what you need to bear in mind
A LEG offers new opportunities, but also brings organisational and legal responsibilities.

BenefitsThe LEG expands the circle of potential participants and creates a local marketplace for solar power.

How to check a potential LEG
The maps provide initial guidance. The detailed review as part of the submission is binding.
Enter your address or locality to identify potential LEG participants in your neighbourhood.
01Enter address or townThe map shows which buildings within the municipal boundaries marked in red are generally suitable for an LEG.02Compare points on the mapEach connection appears as a dot. Dots with the same colour, shape and label can together form an LEG.03Classify discount tierIf no transformation is required, a 40% discount on grid usage may apply. If one transformation stage is used, a 20% discount may apply.04Submit detailed reviewThe maps are intended as a guide. The binding detailed review is carried out as part of the submission via the LEG portal based on the metering point numbers.
High discount levelIf all participants are on the same grid level and no transformation is required for the exchange of electricity, you benefit from a 40 per cent discount on grid usage.

Low discount levelIf all participants are on the same grid level, but a transformation is required for the exchange of electricity, a discount of 20 per cent is granted.

Please note
  • If no point appears for a building, feasibility will be checked manually after the entry has been submitted in the portal.
  • Contact your distribution system operator if your location is outside the BKW supply area (highlighted in blue).
  • It may be the case that no LEG can be formed within a municipal area and at the same grid level, as voltage levels above 36 kV may not be used for electricity exchange. This is a regulatory requirement.
  • Changes in the grid topology may result in the LEG map being adjusted accordingly, as BKW continuously expands and further develops its grid.
