Grid connection
Connect buildings to the electricity grid
Whether it’s a new build, solar installation, heat pump or charging station: so that you can use and feed in electricity safely, your building needs a suitable grid connection with sufficient capacity.

Connected load
Is your grid connection ready for your plans?
Check at an early stage whether the existing connection capacity is sufficient for new systems or a new building.
For new builds, the grid connection is part of the regular construction work. If you are adding a photovoltaic system, heat pump, charging station or other consumers to an existing building, additional capacity may be required. In the customer portal, you can view information about your connection. For a binding assessment, your specialist partner submits a technical connection application (TAG).

Process
Grid connection in five steps
From the building application to commissioning: this is how connecting your building to the BKW electricity grid works.
Depending on the project, different applications and forms are required. Your specialist partner will support you with the technical planning, notification forms and installation. BKW reviews the applications, prepares a quote if required and extends the grid to your building.
Building application 01Submit a building permit applicationSubmit the application for the electricity connection to the municipality together with the building application. BKW will review the application and issue a statement for the attention of the municipality.DAY 02Clarify technical connection requestFor installations with grid feedback – such as photovoltaic systems, heat pumps or charging stations – your specialist partner submits a technical connection application. This is used to check whether the connection is possible as planned or whether the grid needs to be reinforced.Equipment order 03Submit an application via the notification formOnce the new or extended grid connection has been approved, your specialist partner registers the connection with BKW. They also order the necessary components and metering infrastructure, such as meters and instrument transformers.BKW offer 04Review offer and confirm orderYou will receive an offer from BKW including an order form for connection to the electricity grid. Check and sign the grid connection order and send it back to BKW.Commissioning 05Complete installation and commissioningBKW extends the grid up to your building. Your specialist partner takes care of the installation on or in the building, carries out the final inspection and issues the safety certificate. As a rule, this is sent directly to BKW.
Costs
How much does a grid connection cost?
The costs depend, among other things, on the connection ordered, the rated current and the required infrastructure.
A grid connection comprises several cost components: grid connection fee, grid cost contribution, house connection box, any surcharge for the house connection box inside the building, and cable sealing element. The actual costs are shown in BKW’s quotation. The calculation examples serve as a guideline.
The one-off grid connection contribution is based on the cable cross-section of the ordered connection. The grid cost contribution is based on the rated current of the connection overcurrent protective device.
