Correctly implementing grid and system protection
Protection concepts, inverter parameters and decoupling protection are essential to ensure that generation plants can be operated safely and in a grid-compatible manner on the BKW distribution grid.
Small industrial building with technical installation in a green hilly landscape.
Protection requirements
Safe parallel operation with the distribution grid
The grid and system protection prevents inadmissible grid disturbances and reliably disconnects systems from the grid in the event of limit value violations.
For photovoltaic systems, storage systems, emergency power systems, CHP plants or other power generation installations, the protection concept, decoupling protection, coupling switch, inverter parameters and metering concept must be aligned with the requirements of BKW and the applicable industry recommendations. Specialist partners submit the necessary evidence in good time with the technical connection application.

Grid and system protectionProtection and decoupling devices must ensure that installations are safely disconnected from the distribution grid in the event of grid faults, islanding or limit violations.
Procedure
Manage the protection concept properly through to commissioning
For an efficient review, BKW needs complete technical information already in the connection application.
The steps are based on the grid connection process for specialist partners and focus on the protection-related evidence.
Grid connection point 01Assess the installation and grid connection pointRecord the system capacity, feed-in/import capacity, grid level, connection type, metering concept, operating mode and any possible feedback effects.Documents 02Submit daily work slips with protective documentsSubmit the technical connection application including the schematic diagram, data sheets, protection concept, inverter details, Q(U) parameterisation and information on the coupling point.BKW feedback 03Implement feedback and requirementsReview BKW feedback and take any requirements regarding NA protection, grid support, emergency control, metering or parameterisation into account during implementation.Documentation 04Check and document installationCheck protection relays, coupling switches, inverter parameters, and measuring and control components. Fully document parameterisation and test results.Retention 05Complete commissioning and documentationAfter successful inspection, commission the installation, submit the SiNa and project-specific certificates, and retain the documentation for future inspections.

Faults & operation
Systematically isolate PV faults
In the event of repeated shutdowns or error messages, grid quality, parameterisation, protection limits and system components must be checked systematically.
Faults in photovoltaic systems can be caused by local grid conditions, voltage rise, inverter parameters, protection limit values, communication/control components or installation errors. For quick clarification, measured values, fault logs, parameter settings, diagrams, system output and location details must be provided.
